Words Upon the Waves

My experiments with geometry continue.  I would love to hear your reaction to these.  Do you like one better than the other?  Can you explain why?

The Building of a Seascape

Today was an experimental, creative day.  I made a prototype of a new photo concept, based on a sketch of triangles that I drew a few months ago...

Sometimes work feels more like play.  The next step will be to try with "real" prints, not just quick printouts.

A New Musical Favorite

A new post is up on "Song and Scene" featuring this image:

Curious to see who my new musical favorite is? You'll have to click on over to find out. :)

I'd also love for you to visit a few of the posts (to get a sense of what I listen to while I work on photographs) and then recommend other musicians for me to check out!

Readers, I Need Your Help

I'm about to order up a bunch of new prints and mounted prints, and I'm having trouble deciding which I like best. Will you help me decide by participating in the poll below? You can select one image or several. If you'd like to see larger versions of the photographs, just click on the thumbnails.

If you participate in the poll, please let me know in the blog post comments - I'll be giving away a 5x5 print to a random commenter! (Contest ends Wednesday, July 27 at 2pm EST - Poll will be up indefinitely.)

{comments are now closed, though the poll is still open - thank you so much for participating!}

The Cure for Anything is Salt Water

“The cure for anything is salt water - sweat, tears, or the sea” - Isak Dinesen

I am holed up in my air conditioned office, thinking wistfully of yesterday's cool breezes floating across the bay.

Then sit back, relax, and imagine the cool salt spray kicking up as you cruise toward a private island in the blue of Narragansett Bay.

On the Sea

I spontaneously ended up on a cruise of Narragansett Bay this evening, sponsored by RI Audubon. It was lovely.

More photos to come, I am sure! In the meantime, learn more about the Plum Beach Lighthouse here.

Wickford, A Seaside Village

Some glimpses from today's afternoon trip to Wickford, RI. My mother and I browsed the lovely little shops, resisted the siren call of ice cream, and I took some photos at the harbor. All in all it was a pretty nice day.

What I've Been Up to This Week

We visited my in-laws in the Alleghany Highlands this past weekend, and celebrated my father-in-law's 70th birthday.

On Monday, we drove home, stopping for a quick lunch with my Twitter friend Cityslipper on the way. We brought some relatives home with us, to enjoy the seaside for a few days.

What have you been up to lately?

Strolling on a Rocky Shoreline

I had a lovely time at Rome Point in North Kingstown, RI yesterday, despite having to turn back before seeing the seals. I always enjoy trips that combine work (taking photographs) with play (spending time with my sister, nephew, and niece).

Summer Breezes Blowing in my Mind

As I mentioned about a week ago, my husband and I recently returned from a wonderful trip to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Today, I found some photographs from that trip and spent a little time reminiscing about the warm breezes that floated off of the ocean, over the palm trees, and onto my skin as I sat and enjoyed the sunshine.

Art and Science: Irish Moss

I've been thinking about the "awesomeness" exercise I did last week after listening to Michelle Ward's presentation in the Etsy Success Symposium. Specifically, I've been thinking about how to share more of my interpretation between Science and Art.

With that in mind, I'm excited to introduce a new "Art and Science" series here on the blog. You'll notice a new button on the sidebar, which should make the entries easy to find as more of them are posted. My intention is not to dig deep into the science behind the photographs, I think that would be too dry. Rather, I'd like to give you a small glimpse, a taste of the science that informs the art.

----

Irish Moss (Chondrus crispus) is a very common and very useful red algae with a beautiful, fan-like branching pattern. These branches are referred to as fronds.

The repeating pattern of the branching is so lovely, don't you think? It's almost meditative to follow the pathways of the fronds as they divide. It's a predictable pattern, but never perfectly executed. The slight irregularities are what make it unique and beautiful.
