Poetry

Robert Frost is probably my favorite poet. His words evoke scenes near and dear to my heart, of nature and of life. When reading a Robert Frost poem, I can see the pictures I would take to illustrate it, as clearly as if I was standing in the scene with a camera in my hand. My goal over the next several months will be to turn these mental images into actual photographs, and to share them with you!

After Apple-picking
by Robert Frost

My long two-pointed ladder's sticking through a tree
Toward heaven still,
And there's a barrel that I didn't fill
Beside it, and there may be two or three
Apples I didn't pick upon some bough.
But I am done with apple-picking now.
Essence of winter sleep is on the night,
The scent of apples: I am drowsing off.
I cannot rub the strangeness from my sight
I got from looking through a pane of glass
I skimmed this morning from the drinking trough
And held against the world of hoary grass.
It melted, and I let it fall and break.
But I was well
Upon my way to sleep before it fell,
And I could tell
What form my dreaming was about to take.
Magnified apples appear and disappear,
Stem end and blossom end,
And every fleck of russet showing clear.
My instep arch not only keeps the ache,
It keeps the pressure of a ladder-round.
I feel the ladder sway as the boughs bend.
And I keep hearing from the cellar bin
The rumbling sound
Of load on load of apples coming in.
For I have had too much
Of apple-picking: I am overtired
Of the great harvest I myself desired.
There were ten thousand thousand fruit to touch,
Cherish in hand, lift down, and not let fall.
For all
That struck the earth,
No matter if not bruised or spiked with stubble,
Went surely to the cider-apple heap
As of no worth.
One can see what will trouble
This sleep of mine, whatever sleep it is.
Were he not gone,
The woodchuck could say whether it's like his
Long sleep, as I describe its coming on,
Or just some human sleep.

A Snowy Day

Today would have been a perfect day to stay home, drink cocoa, and listen to a Winter Solstice album or two. Unfortunately, I had a bunch of errands to run and a house to clean before one of my last portrait appointments. (I'm pretty much phasing out portraits in order to focus on my art photography.)

It was a good photo day, despite the time I needed to spend on other pursuits. I was able to read some of The Tao of Photography while sitting in a waiting room. It's an interesting read, and an inspiring one. While waiting for my clients to arrive, I had time to take some photos of the flowers my wonderful husband surprised me with last week. And on the way home from the last errand of the day, I stopped for some quick night photography of an iconic local church.

So, all and all, I'd call today a success.

Chilly Thursday

I took a chilly walk in the woods today. The air was fresh and delicious. And the light shining through the white pines was lovely.

Found Film

The Etsy-affiliated "Photo Lab Project" blog brought this incredible online gallery to my attention. Emir Shabashvili develops the film he finds in old cameras, and the resulting images are a glimpse straight into the past. I can just feel the anticipation as each roll comes to life in the darkroom and histories are revealed. Check out the images here.

First Meeting

Tonight should be an interesting night. It's the first meeting of the Arts in RI Etsy Street Team, a group of artists and crafters from Rhode Island who have all chosen to sell their work on Etsy. We've got big plans for our group, and tonight will provide a chance to plan and make things happen. After the meeting, I should have some insider news about upcoming events, so check back soon. You wouldn't want to miss an arts and crafts show thrown by this talented group!
