Natural History Art in Awesome Interiors

Holly Becker of decor8 posted an exclusive first peek of HK Living this morning, and I was thrilled to see all of the natural history touches in the flat that was featured. As you probably know by now, natural history art is a huge part of what I do, and sometimes I like to think I helped start the trend (though more likely it was just a happy coincidence in timing).

I just love the butterflies above the piano, especially since they remind me of these (Moth Wings and July Butterflies):



It feels good to know that something I'm so passionate about, and that I so enjoy doing, is actually relevant in design today. The fact that people are embracing natural science by bringing it into their homes is just wonderful. I think it's important that we remember the history of how humans have interacted with nature, and natural history art lets us do so in a beautiful way.

Making My Office More Awesome

Super excited about this... Unexpectedly, my husband instantly and excitedly agreed that we should install chalkboard doors in the office closet. I am thrilled with them, and can't wait to map out my "Right Brain Business Plan" on them.



To make them, we picked up some standard closet doors at the hardware store, primed them, and painted them with black chalkboard paint. Then we reused the hardware from the old doors to hang them. Easy-peasy!

Feng Shui-ed

I spent some time yesterday afternoon rearranging and cleaning up my office. Sometimes creative space just needs a little pick-me-up, don't you think?

Our new layout means there's now a big, blank wall next to my desk. I can't wait to fill it with pretty artwork. The Anne Julie and Melissa Moss prints will be joined by some pretty things by Geninne Zlatkis and The Wheatfield.

New Things in Summertime

And the dining room sideboard has turned into a bit more of a jungle, since we're "babysitting" some of my parents' plants while their kitchen is being renovated:

What a glorious Spring-like Saint Patrick's Day we're having here in Rhode Island. With sunshine and warm temps outside, and my forsythia branches a riot of blossoms inside, I'm feeling hard put to stay indoors and get work done!

Shop Tour - The Good Earth Organic Garden Center

I have a confession. I played hooky today. I was supposed to spend the afternoon in the basement, choosing which photos to use for an upcoming exhibit at my local library. Instead, I went to one of my favorite places to shop in Rhode Island - The Good Earth.

I hope you'll understand this weakness of mine when you see the photographs! (I tried to wait until tomorrow to share these but I couldn't help myself.)

The Good Earth is a beautiful organic gardening center in western Cranston, Rhode Island. The owners, Joyce and John Holscher, are kind and welcoming - the sort of people who get to know you right away and make you feel at home. They're also very good at what they do - growing beautiful plants, dosing out garden tips, and collecting lovely things for their nursery shop.

Can you see why this was more tempting than slaving away in my basement? Such a lovely place - I've already let them know that my snap-happy self will be back later in the season. I hope you've enjoyed this little tour!

Better Late than Never!

I mentioned yesterday that I'd be posting some photos by the end of the day, but unfortunately some things came up and I wasn't able to. But I hope they are worth the wait!

A little background before I share the images... I spent this past weekend in Philadelphia at my sister-in-law's house. She's a successful (award-winning, even!) voiceover artist, and her success has been a huge inspiration to me in building my photography business. She's always been a good sounding board for my ideas, and has shared a lot of valuable advice on setting and reaching goals.

She also happens to be quite talented in the home decorating department! Wanting to build up my interior photography portfolio, I photographed a few corners of her home during my visit there. I'd love to hear your feedback!
