The Dragon's Egg

I've spent much of my week so far in Connecticut - and thus a lot of time driving. Not that I mind, but I am glad to be staying home today! Yesterday, I had an appointment with one of my beautiful bellydancer friends to take some promo shots for her. We were able to use a gorgeous space - the Dragon's Egg studio near Mystic, Ct. It was actually a bit challenging to shoot with so many mirrors, but the space itself is lovely. A huge, open, nearly round room forms the central studio space. It's walls are covered in either mirrors or windows. This central space is surrounded by nooks for tea or snacks, changing rooms, balconies, and even a loft chock full of mattresses and oriental rugs, for weekend workshop overnighters. The Egg is also stuffed full of odd little items, artwork, fabric, etc. I found this quirky, somewhat bedraggled dragon kite while my dancer friend was getting into costume, and had to take his portrait.

I also had a lot of fun during the shoot. It's been a long time since I've been active in bellydance, and I do miss it. It was fun to reconnect with Katie, and play with costuming! Katie teaches classes and holds workshops galore - if you're even a little interested in bellydance I recommend checking her website out. Bellydance is so much fun, and I've made some great friends through it.

Hump Day Happiness

We can only be said to be alive in those moments when our hearts are conscious of our treasures. ~Thornton Wilder

Today, I am grateful for:
1) Being able to stay home when it's snowing outside
2) My husband making it safely to work
3) My grandfather, who's 90th birthday celebration will be this weekend
4) My dear friends, who will be married this July
5) Handmade mugs from which to drink tea

What are five things you're grateful for today?

Collaboration is a Wonderful Thing!

I am so thrilled to be a part of Arts in RI, as I'm sure I have mentioned before. Recently, I got to do a collaboration piece with the incredibly talented Lisa B. of Pink Lemonade Boutique! I adore pretty much everything she makes. Seriously.

Look at this incredible pillow she made for our collaboration! My contribution was the photograph, printed on fabric (You can buy the pillow here if you're quick!):

Such talent she has. I love the way she's used organic fabric patterns to complement the photo. And her color combinations are, as always, to die for.

Thanks for working with me on this, Lisa! You're amazing!

A Good Day's Work

Today I took some photographs for the Arts in RI Valentine's Day Contest. I got to use some props I had recently acquired, which was fun! Here are my two favorites from that session - which do you like better? I personally like the first.

Inauguration Day

Inauguration Day

"Let it be said by our children's children that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter; and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God's grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of freedom and delivered it safely to future generations. But wait, there's more!

Black Point Snow II

And now it's time for rest, relaxation, and bed.

Cool! I'm the featured seller on papernstitch right now!

Snowy Day

One of the things I love about living in Rhode Island is getting to visit the ocean in all seasons and in all weather. There were surfers in the water at Narragansett Beach today, and walkers on the rocks at Black Point. But, the snow was left pristine in many places - as if this shoreline was more remote and untamed.

In other news, my shop on papernstitch went live today! Do stop by and visit - it's a beautifully laid out site. While you're there, feel free to "heart" me, I'd appreciate it!

Natural History Museum - the Exhibit

I got to the Natural History Museum early this morning, about an hour before it opened. Today, I was there to photograph the actual exhibit room. Since photography (especially flash photography) is prohibited to the public, I had to get my work done before the public showed up.

It was quiet and peaceful and, frankly, a totally different experience than photographing the collections behind the scenes. Previously, I would choose from the climate-controlled aisles of the storage rooms, and set up a still life scene to shoot. Upstairs in the Victorian Room, the displays were arranged for me, in plexiglass cases. I could not move the specimens to ensure a clean background, and had to work around glare. It was fun though - the display specimens were, generally, more decorative and artistically mounted than those kept in the storage room.

Far Away Places

Every year, around this time, I get really antsy for travel. To see new places, meet new people, eat new foods... I LOVE to travel.

Road Trip I

Road Trip II

Planning vacations helps take the edge off, which is actually pretty handy. We usually travel in early September, and reading up on our destinations in midwinter makes sense.

This year, we are heading to Bozeman, MT in July, and also plan to visit England and Scotland in the fall. I can't wait!

A New Year

Hello all, and Happy New Year! I had a fairly relaxing and internet-free weekend visiting my in-laws in rural western Pennsylvania. Sort of amazing - it felt so isolated, with only dial-up available, and with the big news being a new building in a neighboring town. But at the same time, compared to some places in the world, the amenities in rural western Pennsylvania seem pretty amazing.

This week it's back to the grind. As nice as it was to have time off, I'm glad to be back on a more regular schedule. For the next few weeks, I'll be working on marketing, applying to art shows in preparation of the summer season, and participating in some fun Arts in RI activities!
