Going on Haitus Next Week

Hello my dear friends. My husband and I received news yesterday that his Grandpa has passed away. I will be taking the week off from blogging to attend the services, etc. I'm sure my husband and his family would appreciate any thoughts or prayers you could send their way. I'll be back on the blog Monday the 29th.

In the meantime, you might satisfy your blog cravings by visiting some of these lovely blogs:
I hope you have a wonderful week, and that you're enjoying the sunshine while it lasts!

Let's Get Technical - Podcast 5

Week 5: Light Stops

This is what the light meter in my Nikon D70 looks like. Yours may look slightly different, but the principle is the same. Note the dots to the left representing stops darker, and to the right representing stops brighter.

Update on this Week's Podcast

Hi all. Slightly bad news... Due to a last minute trip to a gallery for a photo dropoff, and some resulting traffic woes, the podcast won't be going up today. Keep an eye out for it later this week!

Hump Day Happiness

How's everyone's Wednesday going? Before I start the Hump Day Happiness for the week, I wanted to let you know I'm working on the next podcast for the Let's Get Technical series and should have it up later today. Is the suspense killing you? :-)

On to the gratitude (as always, please share if you want!)

Today, I'm thankful for:
1) Sunshine!!
2) Leftover ramen from Ebisu
3) The color blue
4) Comfortable slippers
5) Houseplants

I love Arts in RI

A team member made this fun slideshow, so I thought I'd share it with you all. I'm thrilled to be part of such a talented group! If you want to see more, check out the Arts in RI website here.

Refinements

A sleeker, more clean-lined take on "Drop of Sunshine"... I think both versions have their own charm. I see this one fitting in with a very modern interior, while the other is a bit more romantic. What do you think?

Finding my Quiet

Maybe it's the weather, maybe it's been too long since my last vacation... I could blame my funk on any number of things.

But maybe I'll decide not to place blame, but to just step out of the rut. I'll stop wishing and start doing. Here's my new, improved to-do list:

1) Start another round of the 29-Day Giving Challenge.
2) Make time every day to visit the garden. Even if it's raining.
3) Spend time each night reflecting on the joys of the day. Write them down.
4) Don't dwell on regrets or disappointments, small or large. Move on.
5) Meditate or bellydance|Sit still or get moving

My Artistic Family

The small woodpecker drawing was done by my mother, the photograph of the dogwood blossoms by my grandfather, the owl by me.

I love having my grandfather's photograph. He used to tell me about his enthusiasm for photography, but I never knew he had actually taken this one until after he passed away. It was framed on the wall of my grandparents' bedroom. I don't know if I've ever seen any of the other photographs he took.

A Quiet Monday

I enjoyed working in the garden yesterday. It's such a pleasure to nurture growing things.

Today I got some things done - finished unloading the car from the weekend's art festival, put everything away, unpacked my new Plywerk order... It was a good day.

Ready for the Weekend

Ahhh - packed up for the show, with a few hours left of Friday to enjoy. What a wild ride this week has been. I'm looking forward to Sunday and getting to relax, just me and the hubby. I'm excited for the Providence Open Market tomorrow, but showcasing my wares to a bunch of (albeit very nice) strangers is exhausting as well as fun. I'm an introvert to the core.

Speaking of tomorrow... here's a glimpse of my fellow Arts in RI peeps who will be there with me!

A Full Day of Photo Projects

Whew, what a day! After a busy eight hours at the day job, I came home to lots of little photography projects to work on. Time has flown by today! This evening after dinner I've been working on a donation to the charity auction at RI Monthly's Best of Rhode Island party, preparing for the Providence Open Market this Saturday, and ordering up mounted prints for the annual RI Artists for Save the Bay event. I'll give you a sneak peak...

I had so much fun at last year's Save the Bay event (it was catered by Local 121 - yum!) I hope to see you there this year!

Hump Day Happiness

Let's take a deep breath, and think about some things we're thankful for in our life...

Here goes. This week, I'm grateful for:

1) An abundance of purple flowers in the garden
2) Finding Polaroid film at a shop in Connecticut - not even expired!
3) Yellow colors on a gray day
4) Having a home to live in and food to eat
5) Calm and quiet

Overstock Sale on 5x5 Prints!!

Big news, everyone. I have an unexpected overstock of prints to sell, so I'm offering some crazy discounts while supplies last - 5"x5" prints for $3 each, or 4 for $10! (That's 80% off the usual price!)

This is an off-Etsy sale that will run while supplies last. It's first come, first serve, and there are 25 prints of each image in stock. The photographs to choose from are below (click the image to see a larger version). Here's how it works:

1) Decide which photographs you want to order, and email the numbers corresponding to your choices and your mailing address to dsbrennanphoto@gmail.com
2) I'll send along a PayPal invoice, which can be paid via a PayPal account or by credit card.
3) Once I receive confirmation of payment, your prints will be shipped out via USPS First Class Mail. Shipping is free for orders within the U.S. and $1.00 for international orders.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!

I'll update as certain prints go out of stock. Happy shopping, and please spread the word!

Q&A - F-Stop/Aperture & Depth of Field

Hi all, I'm back! Thanks for your patience. I had a bunch of great questions on Podcast 2, and I'd like to answer a few of them now. Based on the comments I got, I'm going to explain more about Depth of Field in Podcast 6, so stay tuned for that in a few weeks.

In the meantime I do have a couple of questions I'd like to answer now.

One question asked if all digital cameras are SLR cameras. I think my reader may have figured this one out already, since I no longer see it in the comments section. But it was a good question, so I'll answer it anyway.

No, digital cameras are not all SLR cameras - the vast majority of them are "point & shoots". "SLR" stands for single-lens-reflex. In an SLR, there's a mirror in the camera body. When you look through the viewfinder, you see light that has been bounced off of this mirror, so you're looking straight through the lens. When you press the shutter button, the mirror flips up, allowing the light to hit the sensor or film behind the mirror. Nowadays, with digital point & shoots, you can use the LCD screen to see what the lens sees anyway, since you're looking at what's hitting the sensor. SLRs generally are more complicated and advanced than the point & shoot type cameras.

Susan asked: "When you are taking a photo - how do you go through all this stuff in your head and also take the photo? Do you preset everything? It's a bit like math class."

At this point, I find making adjustments pretty intuitive. Each increment between f-stops is equal to one stop of light (which I'll talk about in a future podcast), so I don't really need to think of all the complicated numbers, just that standard unit. The light meter in my camera tells me how much light I need, and I make adjustments based on that. I do not preset anything, though occasionally I'll get lazy and use auto mode for quick family snapshots or the like. My camera makes it very easy to make quick changes, with wheels right at my fingertips. I know many point & shoot type cameras require you to go into a menu to change f-stop/aperture - for those I probably would use a "program" mode.

I think that once we finish up the different podcast topics, it will all make a little more sense. And of course the other side of it is just practice, practice, practice!
