Whimsy

I may have some big news tomorrow... more to follow.

In the meantime, I've been playing around with "stamping" techniques again. Technically this bird is a crow, and not a raven, but "King Raven" sounds so much more majestic, don't you think? This is one of the few living animals I photographed while at the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center.

SWAN Day

As mentioned in previous posts, yesterday was the SWAN Day Festival at The Artists' Exchange. It was a long day, but fun. I met some great new people, sold some things, and was compared to Ansel Adams! Quite the ego boost, I assure you.

Among the folks I met yesterday were two fellow Etsy sellers. Check out their work:

Creative Juices Flowing

I've been pretty darn productive for the last two days! Well, not productive in getting ready for my show on Saturday, but hey, I won't complain about generating so many photos in 48 hours. So yeah, the show is the SWAN Day festival at the Artists' Exchange in Cranston, RI. It's going to be a great mix of art and music and all sorts of goodies. Click the poster for details:

Back to photography... I worked on more Ocean series images today, here they are, Enjoy!

Woodland Creatures

I do have some more Ocean series photos to work on, so I will be giving you a break from the Natural History series. But first, here are a few more. I just can't help it, I'm loving them!

Keepin' em Coming

Some more images from the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center - I had such a great time photographing their collection! The whole experience brought me back to my college days, studying animal pelts, getting to go backstage at local Natural History museums, learning to identify wetland plants....

Natural History

I've been on a natural history kick lately. Maybe it's my educational background, but I told my husband the other day that I'd love to decorate the house with some natural history displays (vintage, of course - no need to deplete our biological resources any further). He seemed a bit squeamish at the thought of decorating with dead insects pinned to a card....

There is something beautiful about the animals and plants collected and arranged by enthusiasts in the past. I especially enjoy the displays that attempt to be lifelike. Nature is beautful, and who can blame people for wanting to bring it into their lives. There is a touch of creepiness to natural history, too, providing that hint of discomfort which makes for good art :-)

Today, I was lucky enough (and thrilled) to go down to the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center in Mystic, CT and photograph some of their collection. I spent hours there, and I'm going to have to go back again... Here's a small sampling - feel free to comment and vote for your favorite:

Easter Weekend

The other day, I went down to Wakefield to drop of some merchandise for a new gift shop opening there. It's called "Waves of Creation", it features local artists, and it's planned opening is April 15th. I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek of what will be offered for sale - definitely worth checking out! On the way home, I met up with some of my family members and took a hike in the Great Swamp Management Area. Lots of frogs were singing, and it was warm and lovely. Welcome, Spring!

The lighting was beautiful, and this pine looked so majestic, towering over the other trees. And, of course, I couldn't resist including the little detail of the wood duck box...

Happy Spring

One perk of being a photographer is that it gives me a great excuse to buy fresh flowers. I picked up this bouquet of lovely orange Ranunculus today. It looks great on my sideboard! A nice way to welcome spring on this chilly, rainy day.

Revisiting the Archives

Some days, I really, really want to take some photos, and don't have a chance to. Today was one of those days. There were just too many other things going on. I have to say, I'm pretty disappointed. But, thumbing through my archives and playing with some of my older photos helped a bit. Here's one from the day I went to Barden Family Orchard during a thunderstorm in January. It was beautiful.

ThisNext

Hi all. I wanted to let you know a little bit about a button that you will start to see showing up on my blog:

ThisNext is a handy little site that combines social networking with online shopping. Basically, it enables people to share great finds they discover when browsing the web with others in the ThisNext community. That's where the button comes in.

If you see a photograph on my blog that you particularly love, please consider clicking the "recommend it!" button above the photo, thus adding it as a recommendation on ThisNext. It's easy, I promise! If you'd like to try it out, scroll down to the post below this one and you'll see what I mean.

Thank you all for your continued support!

Rhode Island Artists are Great!

I helped fellow Arts in RI member Paula (proprietor of The Venerable Bead) the other day with a quick photo tutorial, so she gave me a quick glass demonstration. (Sorry for the wierd colors, the photo was taken through special glasses to remove flare from around the bead she's making). Anyway - check out her shop. She makes great stuff!

Long Day

I wasn't able to experiment with more starfish photos until late tonight, so didn't have natural light to work with. But, I figured I'd play anyway. Here's the result. I'm also way behind on my 365 days. I think I'll stop counting, and just focus on creating and posting. I plan to pick up some more sea creatures/shells/etc. soon so I can work more on this series.

Just Beachy

It's March. It's damp and blustery, and I'm tired of winter. But, soon enough, I'll be able to walk barefoot on the beach again without losing a toe to frostbite!

My Secret Rhode Island

I stumble slowly, awkwardly through the trees.
They are lichen-encrusted.
A fish crow calls,
and I am enchanted.

Rhode Island's Heritage

As you may or may not know, the Industrial Revolution in America started here, in Rhode Island, in 1793, when the first successful textile mill was built by Samuel Slater. Rhode Island is dotted with mill villages, our rivers are interrupted with mill dam upon mill dam, and our architecture is enriched by the lovely old mills scattered throughout the state. The history of these mills is both awful and inspiring, full of hope as well as despair.

I find it interesting that this juxtaposition exists even today. I am a member of Etsy, supporting the "buy handmade" ethic (i.e. choose handmade over mass-produced goods), yet I am truly inspired by the beauty that these historic buildings bestow upon my little state, even if they did bring mass-production to America.

Here are some revisited images from a trip inside the Hope Mill, near my hometown. It is currently being converted into condos. I feel privileged to remember it when it was a working textile mill, to have visited it when it was all but abandoned, and to know that it will be converted into useful, beautiful living space.

Let's just hope that no more wetland violations occur during the mill's redevelopment - yeesh! (What can I say, I'm also a wetland scientist, I care about this sort of thing maybe a little too much.)
