Strolling on a Rocky Shoreline
I had a lovely time at Rome Point in North Kingstown, RI yesterday, despite having to turn back before seeing the seals. I always enjoy trips that combine work (taking photographs) with play (spending time with my sister, nephew, and niece).

Art and Science: Irish Moss
I've been thinking about the "awesomeness" exercise I did last week after listening to Michelle Ward's presentation in the Etsy Success Symposium. Specifically, I've been thinking about how to share more of my interpretation between Science and Art.
With that in mind, I'm excited to introduce a new "Art and Science" series here on the blog. You'll notice a new button on the sidebar, which should make the entries easy to find as more of them are posted. My intention is not to dig deep into the science behind the photographs, I think that would be too dry. Rather, I'd like to give you a small glimpse, a taste of the science that informs the art.
----
Irish Moss (Chondrus crispus) is a very common and very useful red algae with a beautiful, fan-like branching pattern. These branches are referred to as fronds.

The repeating pattern of the branching is so lovely, don't you think? It's almost meditative to follow the pathways of the fronds as they divide. It's a predictable pattern, but never perfectly executed. The slight irregularities are what make it unique and beautiful.

Happy Birthday Dad!!
At his request, we celebrated my Dad's birthday today by participating in the beach cleanup at Moonstone Beach. It was part of a statewide effort coordinated by the Audubon Society of Rhode Island. And it was a lot of fun! The weather was absolutely perfect, and spending the morning on an isolated beach with family doing something good for our coastal ecosystem was a great birthday idea.
I admit, it wasn't all work and no play... the swallows were simply amazing, and we often paused to watch their acrobatics.
And, keeping a sharp eye out for bits of trash meant my sister noticed this amazing creature washed up on the beach - a lobster larva a little less than an inch long. I love its sandy tail :)

All and all, a lovely experience. Thanks Dad!

A Little Field Trip
I took my Polaroid on a little tour of South County today.
Moonstone Beach Road

I am officially exhausted. Lots of driving, lots of heat and sun, not enough water. I am soooooo glad I have A/C in the car!! But, I had a fantastic time traveling around by myself, with no one to get impatient or to distract me from my mission.
I'll have more photos for you later! My brain is no longer functioning at this point, so I think I'll call it a night.

Redeeming Qualities of New Jersey
Watching the Waves

Another image from a lovely morning at Island Beach State Park.
Unfortunately I'm not feeling very well today, so I'm going to keep this post short. I would, however, like to stick to my promise of telling you more about wetlands. Did you know that beaches are a type of coastal wetland? Yep - everything below Spring high tide is technically considered a wetland. To learn more, check out these links:
Marine Intertidal Zones (Wikipedia)
Cowardin Wetland Classification System (USGS)
Wetland Types (US EPA)
Is there anything specific you're interested in learning about wetlands? If so please let me know in the comments section!

A Touch of Gold
Breathing

The photo title was inspired by Ingrid Michaelson's song, "Keep Breathing". An excerpt from the lyrics:
"The storm is coming but I don't mind.
People are dying, I close my blinds.
All that I know is I'm breathing now. "
We found these balloons on the beach at Island Beach State Park, printed with "Feliz Pascua" - Spanish for Happy Easter.
I really wish they had camping at this park, I could easily spend a few days there (in the off-season, at least). I'd like to go back and explore the Maritime Forest nature trail.

Sand in My Hair
Hi all. I'm back from NJ, we'll see if I need to go back there again this week. I'm not sure why I've been so reluctant to share this, but the bad news I've spoken of is that my Grandpa is not doing well.
It was a stressful weekend, but we're a strong family, and we were almost all there. Saturday morning we woke up early after a fretful night's sleep, and some of us went to the hospital to be with Grandpa when they took him off the respirator. Against all expectations, he's been breathing on his own since then. Things could change at any moment, and none of us really knows what to expect or how to feel. He's been through a lot for a 90-year old.
After getting back to the house Saturday morning, I needed an escape. Several of us headed down to the shore. We went to Island Beach State Park - it felt like the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. Soft blue colors, diffuse morning light, empty sand and sea stretched out as far as we could see. I ran until I was gasping for breath, I took photographs, and I just lay in the sand feeling the weight of the earth supporting me, with the sound of the waves drowning out all of the worry and exhaustion.

I felt like I could stay there forever. But life goes on, so I stood up, brushed the sand out of my hair, and we walked back toward reality.

Of Friendship & Mondays
Hi all! I haven't blogged in a few days, but I have an excellent excuse. Some of my best friends in the whole world spent the weekend here, and I was spending as much time with them as humanly possible. I love photography, but good friends from out of town take priority :-)
I feel incredibly lucky to have friends like these, and I'm a bit sad today now that they're gone. But I will see them again soon, and am looking forward to that. In the meantime, I am back to focusing (no pun intended) on my work. Later today I have an appointment with a light tent and some brownies. Here's hoping I won't be too tempted to eat all of my subjects!
I'm also still browsing through my recent beach photographs from Matunuck, and playing.

Hope your weekend was lovely, too!
