If you're in the D.C. area, I'm very jealous. Why? Because you'll be there for FotoWeek DC! I can't make it there in person, but three of my images will be at the Target Gallery in Alexandria, VA. If you get a chance to see the show, won't you tell me all about it, so I can live vicariously?

Save the Bay - Free & Open to the Public

Want to enjoy some cool bay breezes on a hot summer evening, sipping wine and nibbling cheese while enjoying some of Rhode Island's best ocean-inspired artwork? For free?



Well, Save the Bay is hosting a mid-way viewing of the annual Artists for Save the Bay exhibit and you should head to Providence and check it out. Artists from throughout the state (myself included) have work on display for you to enjoy. A portion of the proceeds any sales goes to support Save the Bay and the great work they do protecting, enhancing, and restoring Narragansett Bay. (So going not only ensures a good time, but also good karma.) You can get a preview here.

Here are the details:

Extended Gallery Hours Thursday, August 6th from 5:30 – 7:30pm. There will be wet paint, wine and cheese, and a few new pieces. The event is open to the public at no charge to attendees. The show ends August 28th.

Hey all - looking for something to do this weekend? Don't forget, Arts in RI is holding its "Spring is in the AIR" show this Saturday at West Side Arts Gallery in Providence! This is such a talented group of artists, well worth checking out!

Thursday Night Fun

Just wanted to remind you, dear readers, that I'll be at Waves of Creation in Wakefield, RI tomorrow for a featured artisan night! Do come by and visit me and my fellow artisan Carol Mania of Lodestar Wovens. We'll be there from 5:30pm to 8:30pm, Thursday November 20.

Waves of Creation Events

Just another quick announcement:

Waves of Creation welcomes author Karen Chilton and illustrator Gary McCluskey for a signing of The Haunting on Devil's Den Road, Book One in the Ghost Girls series of young adult novels just released by Snug Harbor Press.

Karen and Gary will be available to sign books at Waves of Creation on Saturday October 25

Pawtucket Open Studios

Hey there! While I don't personally have a studio in Pawtucket, I am excited to still participate somewhat in the Pawtucket Open Studios this coming weekend!

The fabulous iolabs will be displaying my "Specimen 652" photograph in their shop gallery, along with several other amazing pieces of art and examples of the unique printing and display options iolabs offers. The whole Open Studios event sounds like it'll be fantastic - so stop by if you're in the area! Details on the Pawtucket Open Studios website.

Paaaawtucket!

I spent most of my weekend in Pawtucket! Home of the Paw Sox AND Mr. Potato Head.



Doesn't get better than that, people. AND, I didn't get lost going to or from the Arts Festival. Are you impressed? If you're not impressed, you've probably never driven in Pawtucket!

The show went... ok. Saturday was nice - overcast but mild weather, good crowds, great music. Sunday it poured on and off until about 1:30pm or so, and even after the rain stopped there were very few people who came through. The music wasn't as audible near the art booths, either. But still, having the Arts in RI street team there made the time pass quickly. We had a great time chatting and hanging out, and I have to say I'm honored to be part of such a talented team. We did Etsy proud!

Narragansett Art Festival 2008

Just wanted to post a quick recap of how the weekend went! I am home, the cars are unloaded, and I'm exhausted & badly need a shower, so I'll keep it short. :-)

We had gorgeous weather, despite an ominous forecast of 80% chance of rain on Sunday! I met some wonderful people and amazing artists, I'll probably do a post later this week with some names and website links. I had a lot of fun sharing a booth with the illustrious Julie Beck, and both my husband and my friend Amber were super helpful in keeping me company, going on lunch runs, and generally being awesome. Thanks to all of you who stopped by, it was a treat to see you! And a special thanks to my buyers, I am so thrilled that my work found some good homes.

Perhaps the most exciting news of my weekend was that I received a second place ribbon in the photography category! (The award is for the body of work as a whole, not for just one image.) I believe the award is actually either a second and a half place, or a tie for third. It was a little confusing. The judges had such a hard time deciding that they gave out an extra prize this year. I was honored to receive it, regardless!



I think that's about all I've got for tonight! I hope everyone out there had a great weekend, with something special sprinkled in!

Tomorrow!

What's tomorrow? Why, the "Rhode Island Artists for Save the Bay" event, of course. I'm super excited about it. I'm a little bummed that my friend who works at Save the Bay will be out of town, but oh well. I got a sneak peek at the other art when I dropped my pieces off, and there is SO MUCH! It's really going to be phenomenal. Drop on by and see if you can figure out which one is my favorite. (Besides my own, of course, they're my babies, I have to love them best!)



If you can't attend actual event, you should drop by the exhibit and see the art. The Save the Bay Center itself is also worth checking out - very cool, eco-friendly building. Green roof, restored salt marsh, very awesome map of Narragansett Bay inlaid in the lobby...

The opening reception is June 7 from 5:00-8:30PM. Get tickets here, they are still available! The exhibit itself is free and runs from June 9 - June 27. Hours are Monday-Friday, 8:30AM-4:30PM. Call in advance to make an appointment to see the art.

My week in review...

Life has calmed down significantly now that my first outdoor show is finished! I finally have time to do a nice big blog post, so here's what I've been up to lately...

While grand hopes for camping over Memorial Day weekend didn't pan out, we did do some hiking with friends. My camera definitely needed some exercise, so it came along too and captured these pretty violets.

Most of my week was spent doing less recreational activities and more prep-work for stART in the Park. Between getting prints made up, having rush orders mounted on wood by the amazing iolabs, and matting my prints, I was putting in a lot of 10 hour days (and completely taking over the dining room). I was also doing some bogslogging at my day job (I discovered that aquatic macroinvertebrate I.D. is kinda fun).

All that work paid off when Saturday afternoon rolled around and I only had a few errands left to run in order to get ready. Sunday was the big day, and it started early. We had absolutely stunning weather, and I had a lot of fun. My booth was inbetween two friends - painter Julie Beck and Linda of à la mode. I met some great people, traded Flickr account addresses, and made a few sales. A big thank you to the buyers - I'm thrilled that my work found such good homes.

I don't think I've ever been more mentally exhausted than when I got home last night, but it was worth it. Today I've got plans to actually spend time taking new photos, and next weekend is the Rhode Island Artists for Save the Bay event! Hope to see you there, or later this month at the Narragansett Art Festival!

Save the Bay

I love when opportunities arise to meld my photographic skills with my environmental educational background. Two of my photographs were recently accepted to the "Rhode Island Artists for Save the Bay" event, and I'm thrilled! Save the Bay is a wonderful organization which, in its own words, is "committed to fostering a personal connection between people and Narragansett Bay and encouraging investment in the Bay’s future".

I also have to thank one of my best friends, Staci, who modeled for the photographs that were chosen. I've told her before and I'll tell her again - she's good luck!
