Summer Foraging - Raspberries!

On Tuesday morning, before it got too hot, my mother, her cousin, and I went for a hike in the northern NJ mountains and picked wild raspberries.

On the Cusp of Seasons

Went on a quick hike today at Fort Nature. It was definitely a day where you could feel the change of season, like we were walking the edge where autumn meets winter.

It's a good time of year to find peace.

Dramatic Scenery of the Lake District

During our trip, we spent a few days walking around the Lake District in England. It was lovely. The weather was not terribly pleasant, on one day we got so soaked through that I needed to buy new shoes in town. However, such chancy weather made for some incredibly dramatic lighting as sunlight periodically broke through the rainclouds. Well worth getting a bit wet.

A Springtime Ramble

We had a very pleasant walk last weekend with a few family members, including the water-loving Willow.

This weekend is opening day of the Providence Open Market! Very different than a quiet walk in the woods, but just as fun.

Warm, Sunny, Bliss.

We had a gorgeous weekend here, weather-wise. Sunny and hovering around 60 degrees F - our first taste of Spring. My husband, my sister, and I went on a walk at the lovely F. Gilbert Hills State Forest. I got to break in my new hiking boots and play with my Instax.

Pop!

I am very excited. Something fun is coming soon... something... collaborative! Are you intrigued? I hope so. While I keep you in high suspense, I hope you'll enjoy the third Bubbles image in my mini-series from a recent walk in the woods.

A Little Bubbly

I had a busy but fun-filled weekend, how about you? On my walk last week I took several photos of the bubbles in the stream and waterfall I was hiking nearby. I think they might make a nice little series.

A Walk in the Woods

As I mentioned in my last post, I had a chance to take a lovely walk today. The sun shone its slanting rays through the bare trees, touching everything with gold. An owl flew by with otherworldly quiet. Stone reminders of times past slumbered by the trail. Apple trees stood quietly nearby, with promise for the future.

Cascade Brook

I took my walk at Cascade Brook Conservation Area. According to the sign, this was a favorite spot of Rhode Island naturalist Ken Weber. I liked it too.

Glorious, Glowing, Green

Remember this color?

It's winter in my part of the world. Gray, blue, slate, white... I miss green. (Click on the image to see a larger version.)

A Wintry Walk

I took a lovely walk in the woods this afternoon, at Snake Den State Park. It was the first time I've gone out with the camera in a while and I thoroughly enjoyed admiring the frozen scenery and playing with my Lensbaby Control Freak.

The Magic Hour

Golden

Little bird, little bird
Brush your gray wings on my head
Say what you said, say it again
They tell me I'm crazy
But you told me I'm golden

I know what I know
A wind in the trees
And a road that goes winding under
From here I see rain, I hear thunder
Somewhere there's sun, and you
don't need a reason

Playing with Adjustment Layers

I joined this great group on Flickr today (shortly before caving and signing up for a pro Flickr account). Joining the "Rewind" group led me to this tutorial, which I tried out to create the photo below!

Taughannock Creek

It was a lot of fun. I think I need a little bit more practice to be totally satisfied with the outcome, but it's a start.

This is one of those plants I should know the name of, but always forget. Ah well. Anyone out there in blogland know?

Fort Nature

On Saturday morning (before this weekend's rain) I went hiking with my husband and some friends at Fort Nature Wildlife Sanctuary. I believe my favorite part of that hike is the hemlock grove you walk through, soon after crossing the electrical right-of-way. It stretches down the hillside to the shores of a pond, where the tree roots are draped in Sphagnum and the light streams into the otherwise very dim and quiet forest.

The Hemlock Grove

As often happens when working on photographs, I am reminded of Robert Frost: "The woods are lovely, dark, and deep."

You can find some of Robert Frost's work on Project Gutenberg, by the way. It's well worth reading.
