Save the Bay - Free & Open to the Public

Want to enjoy some cool bay breezes on a hot summer evening, sipping wine and nibbling cheese while enjoying some of Rhode Island's best ocean-inspired artwork? For free?

Well, Save the Bay is hosting a mid-way viewing of the annual Artists for Save the Bay exhibit and you should head to Providence and check it out. Artists from throughout the state (myself included) have work on display for you to enjoy. A portion of the proceeds any sales goes to support Save the Bay and the great work they do protecting, enhancing, and restoring Narragansett Bay. (So going not only ensures a good time, but also good karma.) You can get a preview here.

Here are the details:

Extended Gallery Hours Thursday, August 6th from 5:30 – 7:30pm. There will be wet paint, wine and cheese, and a few new pieces. The event is open to the public at no charge to attendees. The show ends August 28th.

Hump Day Happiness

It's Wednesday again already, can you believe it? Time to spread the love - if you'd like to join in then please post some of your happinesses in the comments section!

Today, I'm grateful for:

1) The internet and how it makes so much accessible that never was before
2) A day without a car - relaxing and low-pressure!
3) The existence of a town like Little Compton, RI
4) The color yellow
5) Being in the middle of (re) reading my favorite book

Song and Scene - Wednesday Morning Calm

I'm going to try something. I mentioned yesterday how important music is to my work. I'd like to periodically pair a particular photograph with a particular song. The intent would be for readers to listen to the song while they observe the image (or images). Why? Because to me sometimes music is the best way to get across my interpretation of the photograph.

I'm using Blip.fm to share the music today.

Summertime, and the Living is Easy

Have I mentioned how great the folks down at The Good Earth are? Today I was able to take some photos on their property. My main focus: a beautiful New England meadow full of wildflowers. I brought along the Polaroid, figuring this would be the perfect place to use it.

Musical Inspiration

I'm going to tangentially relate this post to photography by explaining that I really can't get into a groove/workflow without some kind of music to listen to. My tastes are somewhat all over the place... Feist, State Radio, The Ting Tings, Seamus Ennis, Shiny Toy Guns...

Today, I'm listening to Beats Antique. Back in the day, I was a bellydancer. For maybe like 5 years. Nothing truly professional, but I was in a troupe and we performed and practiced and generally had fun. It's been a while now since I've really danced, and boy am I rusty. But I've been getting back into it on my own, mostly since it's excellent (and fun) exercise. And sometimes I just have to step away from the cameras and do something else creative for a while.

If you're following me on Twitter, you may have noticed me "Blip" this video today. I dig it.

Hope you enjoy. I'm off to dance around the house getting things straightened up, then it's off to a local field of wildflowers for some evening photo ops. Adios!

Green Fields of France

The sun's shining down on these green fields of France;
The warm wind blows gently, and the red poppies dance.
The trenches have vanished long under the plow;
No gas and no barbed wire, no guns firing now.

Hump Day Happiness

Ready to bring a little happiness into the day? I am.

Here are some of the things I'm grateful for today.
1) My blooming Flanders poppies, blowing in the breeze
2) Super spicy salsa
3) Blueberry blue paint
4) Scoring a great deal on a Danish modern armchair over the weekend
5) Pandora radio

How about you? Any happinesses to share?

Let's Get Technical - Podcast 6

Week 6: Q&A

The one big question that you asked was about depth of field, so hopefully this last podcast will help clarify things. Hope you've enjoyed the series! Please let me know if you'd be interested in other podcast series on other topics.

Podcast? What Podcast?

I have been a bad, bad blogger. I promised you a final podcast in the Let's Get Technical series, and have not yet delivered. However, now that my traveling is *mostly* over for the summer, I am getting back on task. Keep an eye out later this week for the final podcast, where I'll go over some of your questions and talk more about Depth of Field.

Need a refresher on what we already talked about? Check out Podcasts 1-5 here.

"Hump Day" Happiness

Hello all! I'm clearly a little slow getting back into the swing of things after my vacation, since I forgot to post my usual Hump Day Happinesses yesterday! There is a lot to be thankful for this week, too!

So, without further delay, here are five things I'm grateful for this week. Please feel free to share some positive things from your own life!

1) Fresh produce from the garden
2) Finally learning how to make tofu great in a stir-fry
3) Getting to spend time with my best friends in the whole world
4) Getting to celebrate the marriage of two of those friends!
5) Traveling away and returning home safely

Your turn! :-)

Home in Rhode Island

Well, as you know I've just returned from a vacation and friends' wedding in Montana. We had such a good time seeing sights and visiting with some of the best people on the face of the earth. It's always hard to leave them, but it is good to be home. It seems we've brought some actual summer weather back with us - two whole days of sunshine and warmth!! So, after spending some time storing away the luggage and travel things, I took a break to give our sideboard a little summer facelift.

Here's what you're seeing: candles in jam jars, big dahlias from the garden, mums to root and replant, a fabric mushroom I just can't get enough of, a terrarium filled with Logee's plants, smooth white stones from Moonstone Beach, vintage gardening/houseplant books, brass quails, and our Phalaenopsis orchid.

And, even though they didn't quite fit in with the dahlia bouquet, I couldn't resist snipping a few of these little beauties and finding them a home in the guest room...

Hope you're enjoying your July!

I'm back from Montana, with photos in tow...

Hello again! I'm home from Montana and glad to be back. I'm still transitioning from vacation mode to "real life" mode, of course.

I took over 550 photos on the trip, and I've looked at a few of them, but not all. I think it may be a while before I can really process which ones I want to touch up and which to stick in the archives...

Here's one I knew was worth sharing. It was taken near Butte, just as a storm was fading...

Sailing through Blue Skies

Hello all. I've been so busy getting ready for a trip out to Montana that I've been neglecting the blog here. And since we're heading out today I'll be away for another week! However, I think this trip will be just what I need to recharge my batteries and get inspired.

I hope you enjoy the upcoming week. Have a fantastic 4th of July weekend! I'll leave you with some new photos from yesterday... mushrooms!

Back to Business

Hello all - my apologies for taking a few extra days of hiatus. Sometimes you just need that time, you know? Here's what I've been up to since returning from the funeral services last week...

The Narragansett Art Festival was this weekend - we luckily had fantastic weather. It was a bit slow, but nice to sit and relax. My neighbor won Best in Show and I couldn't be more thrilled for him. I wish I had grabbed one of his cards so I could share a website with you! If I can find some information I will let you know.

My booth...

So far this week I have worked the day job, started preparing for my upcoming trip to Montana, and broken down/set up some displays at local libraries for the Arts in RI team. (They look good, if I do say so myself). I also ran down to the recently renovated Warwick Museum of Art to enter their "Exposures" photography competition - wish me luck! The show will run July 7-August 1, 2009 if you're interested in checking it out.

So, that's what's been going on with me! How have things been going in your life? Any special news to share?
